Nairobi’s Slum People Learn Reiki !

Monday August 15th was a special day for people from the Nairobi slums of  Huruma, Mathare, Korongocho, Kasarani, Kangemi etc. Some came by Matatu (local 14 seater transport), but most walked the long, long distance to Ram Mandir Hall in Parklands. There were men and boys, women and girls, 43 in all.

Why had they come? They had received Reiki healing from the girls of the Hawkers Market Girls Centre in Nairobi, and had come to learn Reiki themselves. To welcome them were members of The Lotus Healing Seva Group (Kenya). After being initiated to the beautiful healing energy of Reiki, they learned to heal themselves and others. This free camp lasted the whole day, during which time they were given mid morning tea and biscuits and a nutritious lunch.

It was a special time for the LHSG too. August 15th is the birth anniversary of our Founder of Reiki Dr Mikao Usui. History was made for LHSG as we actually taught Reiki to the poor on that day, much like Dr Usui used to heal the beggars in his time! We felt privileged to honour his memory in this fashion.

Although we have held many Free camps before, this one was different. There was so much Love floating around in the hall! We felt cleansed to our soul as we gave of ourselves unconditionally to teaching the wonderful souls that had come to be initiated that day. They in turn, received the teachings with unconditional acceptance!

The sevaks who did seva on that day were: Punita, Monica, Yatinder, Lata, Laxmi, Mamta, Shalini, Jean, Ayala, Raj, Bindi and Vipon from LHSG Kenya (Thurs), Ushma LHSG Kenya (Sat) and Harleen, Kunali and Bhavik from LHS(Y)G Kenya. They share their feelings below:

Lata: The children received Reiki so well! The energy flow was so good in them after the attunement! It was heartwarming to see men in the workshop also! The atmosphere was so peaceful and all were so receptive …..

Ushma: It felt very nice to think we brought the awareness of Reiki in their lives, Reiki to help them always …..All of them were so happy …..

Raj: The hall had such great positive vibrations, Reiki was just flowing, one could feel that the students were so keen to learn Reiki …… In the afternoon, when they were giving Reiki to each other the hall and everyone in the hall were very energised, and satisfied. They felt as though they had discovered a cure for all their problems! …… That day the whole evening, I was in total gratitude, that I had been given the opportunity to do seva and was so fortunate to be of any kind of help…… It really felt like the pleasure of giving, one often hears about the pleasure of giving but this day I felt it. I felt totally intoxicated with love and light.

Mamta: ‘It was an amazing experience!…. when they came most of them were not well(suffering from pains, infections and illness) and when they left at 4pm they were so cheerful and grateful because their pains were so much better!! And for us seeing this was so satisfying! To sum up -it was a truly seva! Camp for people who really needed-Reiki!!

Jean: I thought we had ‘magic day’ last Monday. God was definitely with us and the energy level was high…..I think Mikao Usui was proud of our efforts and those of our attentive participants. It was a fitting celebration of his Birthday….We certainly made a lot of people happy that day and the best thing is that the happiness will just grow and spread as those who were attuned to Reiki 1 develop their skills while practising on themselves and others…. My house help, John, who participated, said “That was a very precious thing you gave us”. He now honours it by practising on himself at least once a day. This week-end he gave his brother Reiki Healing. He is also improving in his work….He is now wondering if students from Eastleigh College (where he studied) might be interested and whether we might be prepared to do something for them. Food for thought ……………..

Kunali: It was a great experience ….. I am glad that I was able to help all those people from the slums …. It was amazing to see them so happy and full of energy …..

Yatinder: I was overjoyed and very uplifting and it was a beautiful experience ….

BhavikReiki for them was like the gift of a new life, they were so happy ……

Punita: For me it was an extremely overwhelming experience as the people from the slums of Huruma, Mathare, Kasarani and Kangemi really touched my heart and now I call them the new extension to the LHSG…… They were “ALL” extremely serious about learning Reiki and were grasping everything so fast and correctly…..  What has left a mark for me is one participant called Reiki ” medicine without the doctor and a bill”. I left the camp feeling that LHSG has made a difference in somebody’s life …..  they felt that LHSG have given them the gift of life, a means of healing themselves, their family, friends and neighbours…..

Monica: Even before the camp started, some of us could feel the presence of Master Usui. It was amzing to see the people coming in and so attentive from the beginning till the end of the camp. They all seemed very eager to learn, and it felt very good to see their enthusiasm. Since most of the students were from the slums-they had never experienced being a part of any such group where they were treated with respect. Seeing their happy faces, made me feel very feel happy. …… I felt we often take a lot of things in life for granted, where as little gestures on our part could make a world of difference in someone’s life Eg.taking Reiki to the common man……. All those who came for this level 1 camp went back happy people and said that they would like to proceed to learn level 2 as well. Our country Kenya would be such a lovely place as this knowledge of healing spreads amongst Kenyans as Reiki not only heals physical ailments but works at the conciousness level, thought level, mental level and when positivity like this spreads its wings one can do only good for oneself and others…… My happiness also lies in the fact, that I have done something which gave me inner satisfaction by participating as a volunteer. This happiness does not fade away as the joy of touching a life and giving back to the society is irreversible.

Ayala:  Monday 15thAugust, was a very happy day for me. The people who came to the Reiki1 camp, looked so tired and sad when they came in, and when they left they were so happy, confident and refreshed….There were two men who practiced Reiki on each other. The one who gave the Reiki, his hand were shaking and he was very focused. Suddenly, the man who got the Reiki, started to shake. his head, arms and legs moved very rapidly. We asked him what has happened, and he said that he felt a huge electric wave entering his head and moving all over his body. He felt the energy…It was an amazing day. The participants were so happy to learn, and happy to get results for their pains so quickly and easily…I felt privileged to be able to be there and to do this seva.
