Seva: Healing members of the public in London, 13 Nov 2011

By Mala Tolia LHSG UK

With all the LHSG Anniversary celebrations happening internationally, we, in the UK were scratching our heads and thinking how we could contribute!

Several attempts later, along came an unexpected opportunity to do Seva; Anita Raj (LHSG UK) had a telephone call from the Oshwal Community UK to invite us to participate at The Hook House in Potters Bar on 13/11/11 where they were holding a Health Awareness Fayre.

Last year, during one of Kamal Tolia’s visits to the UK ,when she created exposure for us we had participated at a similar event .

So, on 13/11/11, we set off full of excitement and anticipation on a bright and very sunny (very British) morning: Bena Shah (our leader), Neha Mamtora, Bijan Popat and Mala Tolia.

Upon our arrival to the venue, we were amazed at how well organised everything was! They had the Fayre open on two floors: the first floor for stalls such as Mental health organisations, Cancer Research organisatons, Hospices and Hospitals. The ground floor was dedicated to Doctors, Consultants, Opticians and Dentists. Here they were carrying out health checks from Asthma to Tumours! You name it, they were testing for it!!
We had been given a ‘stall’ on the stage on the first floor; it was a large cubicle with several chairs and a background of beautiful bandhnis in relaxing colours to create a calm quiet ambience and very private.

Next to our cubicle were placed stalls for Pranic healing, Reflexology and Indian Head Massage. The atmosphere, even at 10am was electric in the entire Hall! The entire place was packed early on a Sunday!

We had been allocated two volunteers to look after us -the healers-and they made sure we had everything we needed; they were at our beck and call, literally. They made us feel very welcome and comfortable.

Our first thoughts, in spite of the warm welcome were, ‘how will the public find us?’ Though we had a prominent position on the stage and of course we had our LHSG banner screaming our presence for all to see!, we were ‘tucked away’ to give us and our clients the quiet and privacy required.

We were then told that the Committee had set up a table at the heart of the hall where people would register to have the treatment and pay £5.00, they would then come to us with their receipt be seen. This worked really well as the clients were paced out and kept coming through in an orderly fashion.

Savita Karekar and Bhavna Dewji joined us to assist in the healing as did Chandan, one of the Oshwal volunteers who has done Reiki level 3; all were a great help especially after Chandan had been initiated in our LHSG healing protocol by Bena.

Our clients varied from people just wanting healing for peace and relaxation to suffering from cancer. Some were exposed to Reiki for the first time and found it very relaxing.
Bena Shah was approached by a couple of group leaders from other organisations who would like us to commit to dates in the new year to give healing to the elderly group etc. again great exposure and opportunity to do more Seva.

My highlight was making a breakthrough to St Luke’s Hospice and Macmillan Cancer Research. We have been trying for a while to get approval from such organisations to allow us to heal their patients but not had any success due to the tight laws and legalities in this country.

In the new year, we will be able to give healing to focus groups locally to Cancer research, Mencap- organisation for the mentally ill-and the Hospice.

So, all in all, it was a very rewarding day; we gave healing to some 45 people and raised £225, half of it was given to the Oshwal Centre, as previously agreed, so LHSG collected £122.50 after Savita’s husband donated £10.

We all felt very elated and satisfyingly tired at the end of the day. Job Satisfaction knew no limits!!!!

Bijan said she felt she was very privileged to be a part of something that made a difference to people’s lives. Neha felt it was an altogether humbling experience as all her clients were glowing after treatments from her!! Bhavna Dewji said she couldn’t believe the vibrational energy that was going through her and into her clients, who also felt it!!
We can’t wait to do more of this in the New Year and expand the group’s personna at the same time.

Seva No. 1. LHSG VISIT TO MOTHER TERESA HOME 16 Nov. 2011

By Isabella Asenwa (Leader)

The LHSG Kenya Tuesday Group which consists of the girls at the Hawkers Market Girls Centre started LHSG’s 6th Anniversary Seva celebrations by doing Seva at Mother Teresa Home on 16th Nov 2011 at 10.00am.

We were welcomed by the sister in charge, Sister Mildred, who showed us around the place and the first place we went was in the baby’s ward which had young babies of 1month to 1 year. It has a capacity of 70 children.

We were not allowed to centre in since the babies were asleep and we would wake them up, therefore all the girls were allowed to see them through the windows but the teachers that is and Cecelia and I were allowed to enter. What amazed me was a set of triplets who had been left by their mother at the place since she had no means of taking care of them and she was mentally not well. We were told that most of the children at that place had been found thrown in dustbins and others wrapped in paper bags, so the home takes them to hospitals after they house them. They usually get people to adopt them. If they are not adopted, they stay and school at the home.

The second place we went was for the elderly women who are mentally sick and handicapped. They are between the age of 14 years to elderly women. Most of them have been rejected by their families because of their conditions and they have no place to go so that is where they stay. Since they were having their lunch we were not able to interact with them.

Lastly we went to the ward which contained children who had been born with disabilities and some of them are place in one large bed. Since they are not able to walk or sit they have to be feed, washed and clothed. In this group we were able to interact with them and they were so happy we surrounded them and sent  Reiki  to them. The energy was so powerful that you could feel your hands shaking. Each girl was able to say a prayer to them and we took their names and we have decided that every Tuesday we will be sending Healing to them.

We had carried with us Bunches of Bananas, Oranges and Mangoes for which we  had been given money to purchase by Kamal and we gave to the sister and they were very appreciative and urged us to take more people even for service especially on Saturdays.

The LHSG Sevaks that did this Seva were: Faith, Yvonne M, Cecelia, Mercy, Sheila N, Yvonne A, Seline, Hellen, Ashley, Mary, Gladys, Winnie, Sheila A, Lillian, Florence and Isabella.

Sacred Ceremony of Planting a Tree

Many of us have some time or the other planted a tree or contributed towards planting a tree. It is a very simple thing, and we feel pleased that indeed we have done a great deed by doing so and then forget about it. Not many of us remember what genre of tree we planted, what the appearance of the tiny plant was when planted and nearly 95% of us do not ever bother to go back and even check on the growth of the tree we planted. I would have done the same if I wasn’t guided by my guru Kamal Tolia about the right method of tree planting.

On the morning of 19th October our group Lotus Healing Seva Group joined the Mega Tree Planting Activity jointly conducted by Lions Club International and the Aga Khan Development Network.  It was there that the group members realised that our tree planting method was quite different from rest of the people. As guided by Mr.Sethi of the Lions Group, each member selected a plant of their choice, and walked in a group holding a plantling in one hand and a jerry can or bottle of water in the other.

The group decided to select one area of the forest and formed pairs. Each pair chose two ground holes previously dug up. The pairs then prayed at their respective ground holes, asking Gaia (mother Earth) to kindly accept the tree which is being planted. Then the plant was placed in the hollow and the plastic removed away from it. We all put soil covering at the base of the plant, well covering the roots while chanting the Aum Mantra and giving reiki energy from our hearts and hands.  We patted the soil with our bare hands as our love flowed into the soil from our hands. Next we watered the plant with love, by pouring water over our hands and letting it overflow onto the plant. Once done we did the Shanti or Peace Mantra at our respective plants, visualised them as strong beautiful trees, and told our plants that we love them.  Had a good look at our little trees which we have now adopted. I use the word adopted, as each member who planted the tree, has been and will be sending reiki energy daily to their individual trees and will be monitoring their growth time and again.

Having accomplished this sacred act of tree planting, we gathered all the plastic bags which were holding the plant prior to planting and put them in the bin and made sure not to leave any sort of litter around. Some of our group members like Laxmi and Prafulla were quite keen to water and give healing to plants which had been carelessly just planted but not watered by some school students who were ignorant of the right method of planting a tree.

As per Hindu Scriptures we are not meant to cut down any tree at all. However, if due to any pressing requirement if we do cut down a tree-then we are supposed to plant other five trees somewhere to repent for that sin.  After having planted a tree, we are meant to be looking after it, nurturing it, protecting it till it reaches our own height and is woody and firm. Had we all been observing this ancient knowledge, we all would be breathing a fresher air and having a pleasant environment all around us. By cutting down trees we not only bring in changes of atmosphere, but also affect the habitats of many living beings. The pretty little butterflies and birds, the cute little insects that were a common sight when we were growing up have been snatched from our children by us the parents by depriving them of certain species in our surroundings.

While on our way out we decided to do our “circle of love” for the park. We circled around a huge tree, holding hands, visualizing the whole City Park in that tree, saying prayers and then sending out Reiki vibrations to the park and all the creatures living there via the tree.  To our amazement a lot of monkeys thronged on to the tree, and once we had finished they all dispersed as if they just came to receive the energy.

This is the least we could do for Mother Earth who has nurtured us all selflessly and at the same time honour the great ambitions of the Late Prof. Wangari Maathai who aimed at a greener Kenya and a greener World.

The LHSG members that participated in this tree planting were Prafulla, Laxmi, Ayala, Shalini, Sofia, Mamta, Nalina, Mridula, Kamal, adhumita, Anuradha, Punita, Monica, Ushma, Kailesh, and the youth members were Pranav, Anoushka, Aleena and Harleen.
