Pranayama

Breath is Life and Life is Breath. What is the first thing that we do when we are born? We let out a loud wail as we take our first big gulp of air, ‘Prana’, our breath of Life! And with this breath we start our life. It is this inhalation of the Life force, Prana, which starts all our systems independent of our mother’s. And we start ‘living’.

As infants, our breathing is perfect. Perfect inhalation, Perfect holding of breath, Perfect exhalation, followed by Perfect resting i.e. no breathing. Sadly, as we grow up, this perfect rhythm is interrupted and breaks down. Stress of all kinds, physical, mental, emotional, is usually the cause. Our breathing becomes too shallow, or too fast or too slow, or a combination of all three. Not enough Prana going in. Our systems start to break down too. Small wonder that we end up having diseases.

Pranayama is made up of two words: Prana (Life Force, Breath) and Yama (Control). It implies Controlling or correcting the taking in of Prana, i.e. correct breathing. The result is perfect functioning of all our systems, restoring health.
